To write is to recognize your soul is a wellspring that pours forth onto the page and dares.—Pastor Angie
SOULjourner,
I dare you to write without editing your heart. Writing—or as I prefer to call it scribbling—is more than just words on a page. It's a form of what I call "ARTvocacy" – where personal + collective expression rests in wholeness.
As we celebrate the second year of National Black Stationery Week (February 22nd to February 28th), let's lean into the intimate intersection of scribbling, ARTvocacy, and healing play. This week is an opportune time to honor the excellence + beauty that Black folks have brought to the stationery world, culminating in World Black Stationery Day on February 28th.
There's a profound, childlike power in the simple act of putting pen to paper. When we embrace writing as an expression of childlike wonder, we invite divine creativity + courage to accompany us. This becomes a spiritual practice and a declaration of our daring spirit. By approaching writing playfully, we reclaim our agency, choosing imagination over constraint.
In this artful process, we become conduits of creativity, allowing our innermost thoughts + feelings to flow freely onto the page. This act of creation not only heals but also ARTvocates for the importance of self-expression in the written word.
Consider the historical significance of Black writers and their stationery, from Frederick Douglass's powerful letters to Mary Church Terrell's meticulous journals. More than just communication—it's an act of daring, a testament to how scribbling can be both an art form + an act claiming personal + collective agency through creative expression.
The healing aspect of scribbling cannot be overstated. When we scribble, we:
Create sacred spaces for our unfiltered thoughts + divine inspiration
Process trauma + celebrate peace on our terms
Document our journey for future generations
Transform personal pain into collective power
Practice revolutionary soul care through creative expression
Dare to speak truths that others may have silenced
Embody gratitude in a love letter that says, "Thank you."
This week, I invite you to reflect deeply on your relationship with scribbling. What stories are flowing through your soul, waiting to be channeled onto the page?
What truths have you been holding back?
Remember, every time you put pen to paper, you're not just scribbling—you're participating in a long tradition of storytelling, healing, and ARTvocacy that requires both courage + faith.
Affirmations + Soul Care Practice
As we pick up our pens this week, let's remember the transformative power of playfulness every time we open our journals, send a thoughtful note, or craft our stories.
I affirm: Scribbling is not something I have to do, it's something I get to do.
I affirm: I am not my scribbling.
Now find a moment with pen + paper. Write freely without judgment, without second-guessing yourself, or editing—letting compassion flow through you.
