SOULjourner,
Today, we contemplate stillness in the wilderness—a Lenten space to conclude our season of sacred waiting + embrace the shalom of resurrection.
Though stillness might appear as inactivity at first glance, it is a state of deep activity: grounding, discerning, and releasing.
Psalm 46:10 - "Be still, and know that I am God"
Here, "still" (Hebrew: raphah) means to cease striving, to let go, surrender.
It's an invitation to stop our anxious efforts and recognize God's sovereignty.
Exodus 14:14 - "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."
In this context, "still" (Hebrew: charash) means to be silent, to stop speaking.
It's about trusting God's action rather than relying on our own words or efforts.
1 Kings 19:11-12 - God's presence in the "still small voice" or "gentle whisper"
This passage emphasizes that God often speaks not in dramatic displays but in quietness.
It encourages attentiveness and listening in stillness.
Mark 4:39 - Yeshua/Jesus calming the storm: "Peace! Be still!"
Here, "still" (Greek: phimoō) means "be muzzled" or "be silenced."
It demonstrates the power of stillness over chaos.
In biblical usage, stillness is about addressing a transformative state of awareness that yields inner calm, trust, and receptivity to God's presence + guidance.
Stillness is a deliberate decision to swap striving for resting in God's sufficiency.
A Blessing - Stillness in The Wilderness
As we transition from this Lenten season...
May the stillness of the wilderness become your sacred refuge, a holy liturgy of grounding, discerning, and releasing.
May you cease striving and rest in the sovereignty of God, trusting that He fights for you and holds you in shalom.
May you hear His gentle whisper in the quiet, reminding you that His presence is near, bringing peace to every storm within.
May this stillness transform your heart, renew your spirit, and prepare you to embrace the fullness of resurrection life.
