SOULjourner,

Today, we contemplate hope in the wilderness—a Lenten space where longing + promise converge. Much like dry land anticipating rain, we await God's faithfulness to emerge through the aridness of our transitions + challenges.

Jeremiah uses the Hebrew word mikveh (from qavah, meaning "to wait eagerly" or "to bind together") to describe God as both hope + living water:

"O Hope (mikveh) of Israel, its Savior in time of distress... You are the LORD, the fountain of living water" (Jeremiah 14:8).

O LORD, the Hope (mikveh) of Israel, all who forsake you will be ashamed... because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living water (Jeremiah 17:13).

“All who came upon them have devoured them; and their adversaries have said, ‘We are not guilty, inasmuch as they have sinned against the LORD who is the habitation of righteousness, even the LORD, the Hope (mikveh) of their fathers...’ (Jeremiah 50:7).

In the wilderness, hope is active in the present moment for what's to come in the future—a defiant trust that God transforms wild places into sacred thresholds. Like the mikveh's living waters that cleanse + consecrate, hope calls us to plunge into divine promise.

Hope + Autism

Hope finds its flow in sensory mikvehs—those moments when you hear a soothing melody, touch a grounding texture, or plunge yourself into deep focus, it becomes like living water, washing over + renewing you. Just as the mikveh's water offers immersion moments, these sensory stimming rituals become sacred spaces where God’s hope flows in and through you.

Meditate: Where do you experience hope as living water in your senses? How might God be inviting you to immerse yourself in these moments of hopeful renewal?

A Blessing - Hope in The Wilderness

This Lenten season...

May you find God’s hope pooling in the cracks of your wilderness.

May your waiting be woven with trust, your thirst be quenched with living water.

May you, like Jeremiah, name God as your mikveh—the One who gathers your fragments into wholeness.

Amen + Asé
